These stories are heart wrenching, painful, and occasionally humorous. This collection of short stories is a perfect introduction to Hughes’ work. By the time I finished the last page, I was emotionally shattered by these stories. My previous encounters with Langston Hughes had been with his poetry, of which I’m a fan. What Hughes is, is a hugely talented writer, period. Too often, he is thought of as the queer, black poet from Harlem. It is time Langston Hughes’ reputation be salvaged.
